Debbie's Story

Updated: Apr 6, 2021

Hi, my name is Debbie. I have worked at Open Door Accommodation project for almost 3 years and much has changed since I started. The service continues to evolve to meet the ever changing requirements of young people working on many different issues daily within a very diverse group of young and often vulnerable young people.

It is the changes and the challenges that I enjoy most about the job - no day is ever the same. I love to see the changes that we can make to a young person's life. Recently I had the opportunity to work with a young person who did not want to engage with the support and was reluctant to use their room. Through time and a lot of perseverance I got her to the stage where she started to engage.

Building a professional relationship with her, she opened up and it was not that she did not want the support but she was scared to open up to someone else about how insecure that she really felt about herself and life in general. We worked on her self-esteem and confidence and through time she could notice the difference in herself and the way that she felt. Three months later and she had started college and was looking forward to her future.

This is why I enjoy working with young people, supporting them to see the bigger picture.
